Through this chapter, the student will have the means to talk to about the three domains of life and shall also understand the need for standardized taxonomy and systematics for a living organism.

Further, the concept of species and taxonomic hierarchy will be described, and binomial nomenclature will be explained in detail. Before the chapter ends, the student will understand the tools for the study of taxonomy-museums, zoological parks, herbaria, botanical gardens, etc. There are 11 questions in the exercise. This chapter will talk about how attempts have been made to classify living organisms and later, students will understand how different criteria were being used instinctively in the classification of five kingdoms.

Further, the chapter will let students understand the considerations which have influenced the classification system and what are the salient features of the kingdoms. The chapter continues to explain the various details of biological and how other characteristics have influenced the classification of different kingdoms of Monera, Protista, and Fungi which further lead to the major classification of Lichens, Viruses, and Viroids into different groups.

The chapter will continue to talk about information related to different characteristics which can be found in a variety of living organisms like - Algae, Bryophyta, Pteridophyta, Gymnospermae and Angiospermae and how they are highly variable from one another. There are 12 questions in total. Through this chapter, the students will come to know about the fundamental features of different animals, their forms and structure. Further, you will about the study the salient features of the systematic classification and how important it was in order to describe the emerging new species. Further, students will get to know about the classification of animals and the basis of the classification from nonchordates up to phyla level and from chordates up to class level.

The study of the internal structure of plants called anatomy will be introduced for the students so that they can understand the different organized organs and their associated functions in flowering plants. Different organs of higher plants like root, stem, leaf, inflorescence, flower, fruit and seed, etc.

There are 12 questions in total in the chapter. In this chapter, the large variety of organisms of the Animal kingdom at both multicellular and unicellular level will be discussed for the better understanding. The student will get to know about the organized manner of the animal tissues and their basic functions in both unicellular and multicellular. The morphology of simple organism and the complex organisms like humans will be discussed.

Students will be surprised to know about the anatomy and functions of tissues which are organized in a manner to form organ system and how these different systems perform various functions like digestive, circulatory, respiratory, nervous and reproductive, etc.

A brief account of an insect cockroach will be provided to the students. There are 14 questions in total. In this chapter, students will get to know about the detailed description of the diversified form and appearance of all life forms.

The chapter will talk about the cell theory and the inanimate details about the cell which is the basic unit of life in all living organisms. The students will get to know in detail about the structure of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. The fundamental details about the plant cell and animal cell will make the students understand the difference. Further, in the chapter, you will get to know more about cell envelope, cell membrane, cell wall, etc.

The structure and function of the cell organelles will be discussed. Other important parts of the cell-like endomembrane system, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi bodies, lysosomes, vacuoles, mitochondria, ribosomes, plastids, microbodies, cytoskeleton, cilia, flagella, centrioles ultrastructure and function ; nucleus, nuclear membrane, chromatin, nucleolus etc.

In this chapter, the student will get to know about the elemental analysis of the chemical constituents of living cells in plants, animals and microbes. Further, in the chapter, you will learn about the biomolecules found in living tissue.

Students will get to know the exciting aspects of chemistry related to the structure and function of proteins found in living organisms. Before the chapter ends, you will learn about the roles played by the carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids, enzymes, etc. The types and properties of the enzyme along with their related identifiable actions will throw some light for better understanding. There are 15 questions in total.

In this chapter, you will get to know how a life form in a single cell starts. Further, the chapter will talk about the growth and reproduction carried out by the cell. These characteristics are indeed in the living organism.

The cycles of growth and division of the cell shall be discussed in the chapter. The students will get to know about the mitosis and meiosis in details and will help students in understanding their significance in the life of an organism.

There are 16 questions in total. The chapter will describe the Transportation mechanism in plants and how the movement of water, gases, and nutrients occurs in plants. Some light will be thrown on the process involving the cell to cell transportation and how the process of Diffusion facilitates. Students will understand the active transport. The perspective of plant-water relations and further details about Imbibition, water potential, etc.

Some of the basic functions like osmosis, plasmolysis will help students in better understanding. The long-distance transportation of water and other processed like absorption, apoplast, symplast, transpiration pull, root pressure, and guttation, etc.

Other indeed processes of plants like transpiration, opening and closing of stomata, uptake, and translocation of mineral nutrients-Transport of food, phloem transport, mass flow hypothesis and diffusion of gases will be discussed. This chapter will talk about the essential minerals, the role played by macro- and micronutrients the deficiency symptoms found in plants and the level of toxicity caused by some mineral.

The students will get to know about the elementary idea of hydroponics which is used as a method to study mineral nutrition. Further, in the chapter, the students will read about the metabolism process involving nitrogen, a brief account on the nitrogen cycle and the related biological nitrogen fixation carried out by microbes in plants. This chapter contains 10 questions in total. In this chapter, the students will know about the process of photosynthesis which is the mean of autotrophic nutrition in plants.

It further discusses the site where photosynthesis takes place, the elementary idea about the essential pigments involved in photosynthesis. The chapter further discusses the photochemical and biosynthetic phases which happen during photosynthesis.

The student will get to know about the cyclic and non-cyclic photophosphorylation, the chemiosmotic hypothesis, etc.

They will understand the photorespiration, the C3 and C4 pathways and how some factors affect the photosynthesis. This chapter contains 9 questions in total. In this chapter, you will understand the mechanism of exchange of gases. The understanding of the cellular respiration will be provided along with a detail description of further processes like glycolysis, and anaerobic fermentation.

The chapter further talks about the involved TCA cycle and how the aerobic electron transport system is carried out. The student will understand the relation between energy and how the number of ATP molecules generated. They will understand the details involved amphibolic pathways and respiratory quotient for further understanding. In this chapter, the students will understand the process involved in the germination of seed and what are the phases of plant growth and some details about the plant growth rate.

Further, the conditions of growth will be discussed. The details about the differentiation, dedifferentiation, and re-differentiation shall be discussed in the chapter and how the sequence of developmental processes in a plant cell is significant. The information about the growth regulators like auxin, gibberellin, cytokinin, ethylene, ABA, etc. The chapter further accounts about the seed dormancy, the vernalization and the photoperiodism for some better understanding. In this chapter, students will learn about the alimentary canal and digestive glands and what is the role of digestive enzymes and gastrointestinal hormones in the digestion process. Further, the information can be taken into the account about the peristalsis, digestion, absorption, and assimilation of proteins. The chapter also talks about the carbohydrates and fats, the calorific values of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats shall be discussed in detail in the chapter.
